“Coaching is a discipline which was born in the U.S. in the 1990’s with the purpose of improving the individual performance of top athletes. Since then, it has successfully been implemented, and today, these coaching lessons have been extrapolated from the world of athletics to many other different fields of human activity”.

Executive coach, PCC of the International Coach Federation

In the last years, coaching has found in the world of large organizations, a place to grow and develop. However, it is gradually expanding in new directions and areas such as education, politics and health, among others, creating an environment for growth, purposeful action, and sustained improvement.

Coaching is a product and a result of diverse sources. Therefore, there are several definitions of it. Nowadays, many theories co-exist that are all related. In terms of practice and results, however, differences are minor.

One recent working definition of coaching was proposed by Talane Miedaner: “Coaching closes the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. It is a professional relationship with someone who accepts nothing but your best and who will advise you, guide you, and encourage you to go beyond self-imposed limitations in order to realize your full potential”, from her book “Coach Yourself to Success”, published in 2002.
